Novelty detection for the identification of masses in mammograms

Mammography is the only feasible imaging modality for screening large numbers of women for breast cancer. At present, there is a need for an automated mammogram analysis system which could highlight areas of interest and serve as a smart prompting system for use by a radiologist. A novelty detection process for the identification of masses in mammograms is proposed for this purpose. The steps involved in novelty detection are presented, and results obtained from a standard database are discussed.
