Emma Walker
CDT student
Emma completed an integrated master’s in Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter in 2023. Her master’s project involved applying biological concepts to the optimisation of AI for which she researched a novel regularisation rule aimed at constraining the complexity of artificial neural networks for image classification tasks, based on the function of astrocytes in the brain.
In 2022, Emma completed an internship at the Big Data Summer Institute (SIBS programme) at the University of Michigan. There, she undertook a project analysing spatial transcriptomics data from the mouse hippocampus to create a metric to quantify if gene expression is spatially correlated.
In the Health Data Science CDT, Emma is looking forward to pursuing interdisciplinary research combining machine learning with applications in healthcare.
