Joshua Steele
CDT Student
Joshua is a DPhil student on the Healthcare Data Science CDT, and he is funded by the UKHSA. He is supervised by Prof Jasmina Panovska-Griffiths and is a member of the Mathematical Modelling for Public Health Policy Support group and the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections.
His research uses statistical modelling and machine learning to understand, predict, and respond to emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases and to inform public health policy. His DPhil aims to develop an adaptable, disease-agnostic toolkit for future outbreaks. This toolkit covers clinical risk prediction, disease surveillance, epidemic modelling, and spatiotemporal characterisation.
His current DPhil work includes developing a clinical risk prediction pipeline that compares established risk scores with complex machine learning approaches using the same routinely collected clinical information. He is also investigating West Nile virus transmission by mapping patterns in human, animal, mosquito, and environmental data. Additionally, he is developing a surveillance tool to identify changes in how dengue presents in patients over time.
Outside of academia, Joshua enjoys athletics and swimming and is the Jesus College MCR President.
