Owen Pullen
CDT student
Before starting his DPhil, Owen worked as an epidemiologist. He then moved into the field of Data Science and Data Engineering whilst working at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), part of the civil service.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked to increase the automation, quality and efficiency of the reporting of the UKHSA’s routine COVID-19 statistics. After the epidemic's response was wound down, Owen worked to make data more readily available to optimise analytics within the organisation.
Owen has experience working with very large health datasets (using SQL, R and Python) and experience of building ETL and ELT pipelines, data warehousing, test driven development, maintaining code bases using version control software and designing reproducible statistical analysis pipelines.
He loves working as part of a team and is passionate about building maintainable, scalable and cost-effective infrastructure that solves real-world business problems
He completed a BSc Biology degree from Swansea University and an MSc in the Control of Infectious Diseases, focusing on Health Data Analytics, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
