Epidemiology is the study of the causes, distributions, occurrences, and patterns of disease in populations. Epidemiologists are therefore inherently interested in disease definitions (and subtypes) and data sources for estimating both numerators and denominators to establish measures of disease frequency, patterns, and outcomes.
