Catrin Moore
Research Group Leader in the Global Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance
I joined the BDI in May 2018 as the Research Group Leader of Oxford GBD (Global Burden of Disease), an Oxford-based group that works in partnership with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle to produce data, health metrics and geospatial maps. Our flagship project, Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) applies methodologies utilised by IHME in its ongoing Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study to build an evidence base for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with an initial focus on a select number of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. We will produce comparable AMR burden estimates for these select ‘bug-drug’ combinations from 1990 to the present in all countries included in the GBD study; these maps and data collated will be useful for the global research community and for policymakers to tailor interventions at the local level.
My research has focused on clinical microbiology, particularly in South East Asia where I was based for six years running diagnostic and research laboratories in Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Laos PDR and the Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I have also worked with numerous research groups across Africa while based in the Epidemic Diseases Research Group Oxford (ERGO). I am a panellist and chair assessing Athena SWAN applications for Advance HE (formerly ECU) and am passionate about public engagement in science to inspire the next generation of scientists.
